China Energy Investment Corporation, a state-owned power producer, has launched a carbon capture project at one of its coal-fired power plants, which will be Asia’s largest carbon capture facility.

The Taizhou Power Plant’s CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage) facility has the capacity to store 500,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually, as per state media report. China aims to expand the use of CCUS in its vast coal-fired power plants, which continue to grow as demand for electricity increases.

According to market participants, this year China was turning to coal to keep its power grid stable as concerns over power shortages prompted from China’s growing fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) . Electricity shortages are likely to return as the accelerating energy transition continues to put pressure on the grid.

China currently has about 366 gigawatts (GW) of new coal capacity planned for construction, which will account for about 68% of the world’s new coal capacity planned for 2022. Outside China, coal capacity is shrinking, with 2.2 GW in Europe and 13.5 GW in the US shutting down last year.

With China, the world’s largest energy consumer, striving to peak emissions by 2030, carbon capture and storage is one-way China is reducing emissions from coal.

In the UK and elsewhere in the United States, CCUS has gained momentum following strong government support over the past few years as part of a solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet the goals of the Paris Agreement on a global scale.
